We All Stumble

We All Stumble

James 3:2 For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well.

The fire triangle of fuel + oxygen + heat (ignition) are necessary for there to be fire. “We all stumble,” we’re all capable of starting the fire. Can we remove an element if the other person is trying to light up?

In the Emergency Response world, it’s not unusual to meet people on the worst day of their lives. It’s not unusual for a person to have unrealistic expectations for the outcome of their loved one’s medical emergency. At this point in their life, there is nothing else happening on the whole planet except for the mission of saving their loved one’s life.

Sometimes, we’re the hands that deliver the miracle. Sometimes, we’re the last touch before their soul leaves. It’s not unusual for a companion to “dump” on the medic. “Why are you stopping? What took you so long to get here? You look like you’re a teenager (some of my partners were in their early 20’s). Do you even know what you’re doing? Can’t you shock them or something?”

We quickly learn not to take attacks like this personally. We recognize that emotions are adding the fuel, the situation is the oxygen and all we have to do is start defending ourselves in order to add the spark.

But what if you live with the “offended” party? “We all stumble. . .” And we all control part of the triangle. Whether it was me, or occasionally, my bride that erred on something, is it worth the flames to vindicate myself? Should I crush my flower in order to protect my “honor”, giving Satan another flame to enjoy?

Father, we ALL stumble and we’re ALL Your children. Give us the wisdom, courage and selflessness to stop the fires.
